I need an Archery set for a 13yr old. Any Suggestions?

I need a good archery set for a 13yr old. I’d prefer something under .00. I looked on Amazon.com but i didn’t know which one is good. Ideally i would like the regular metal tips, an arm guard, a quiver, and maybe a target even if separate. But it all needs to be sturdy.

Also what is better, the bows with a pulley or the ones without?

If you’re in the US, I suggest going to http://www.usarchery.org. Find a range near you, with luck the range will offer instruction and free equipment. Here in Los Angeles, for instance, most of the local ranges offer a free beginner class and free use of our equipment for life.

Now, there are many toy bows out there that you can purchase for that price. The question is, what are you planning on doing with that equipment? Does he need it for boy scouts for a badge? Does he want to learn how to bow hunt? Is it for school? Does he want to learn to compete? The thing is a bow set for under $80 will always be classified as a toy. Most likely they will be made entirely out of fiberglass. Sturdy, but not very good in terms of accuracy and speed. To get a decent recurve setup(ones without pulleys) look to spend around $200. Compounds, the bows with pulleys, generally cost more than that.

Now, other than cost. Compound bows are easier to use in the beginning, that’s why it’s expensive. I say in the beginning because at the end, to become the world champion compound shooter will take as much dedication and skill as to become the world champion recurve shooter. The selling point of a recurve is that, when you use it you have to do it right or you won’t hit a thing. You do it right in the beginning and the things you learn with a recurve can easily be adapted for a compound. The reverse is not usually true.

well first off i will tell you you will find nothing in the area of $80.00. First off i would take your son to an archery pro shop have his draw length measured if he is over 28" you may want to consider a full sized or an adult sized bow the bow absolutely has to fit or accuracy will be affected. this now leads me to draw weight if your son is relatively strong and has over a 28" draw length he may be able to pull back a 50-60 lb draw weight, which means you are now getting into full sized bows. If your son is smaller than a 28" draw length you may want to look at Browning’s line of youth bows which consists of the Micro Midas 3 or 4 (both are in production) And the Micro Adrenalin which goes up to a 28" draw and 40-50 pound draw weight. The Micro Midas goes up to a 28" draw Please note you are not going to find these two bows at $80 but you may find them for maybe 100 or so at http://www.ebay.com Remember this all depends on your son’s body structure. Take him to a pro shop and get him checked out for a bow have him draw a few bows back to see how much he can draw and just so you know lightly and i mean lightly retract the cams them don’t release the string or it will snap just guide it back while still holding on to the string
