What is the average draw strength for an archery bow?

I would like to take up archery as a hobby – targets only. What is an average draw strength/size for a bow used by a female? Can any bow be adjusted to the needed strength?
Are there any other tips you may have?

You didn’t specify recurve or compound. A compound bow will have a wider range of adjustment than a recurve, as a matter of fact a traditional recurve/longbow won’t be adjustable, only modern recurves has adjustable limb pockets.

Now looking up and down the range most female non competitive target shooter I know shoot somewhere around 24-32lbs, recurve. Competitive shooters will shoot 34-38lbs in the US, the elite ranks go up a bit higher to 42lbs. Korean female archers shoot 44-46lbs bows. Recurves usually have an adjustment range of around 10% up and down depending on manufacturer.

Now if you’re talking about compound, most female compound shooters I know will draw around 45-50lbs. The letoff on compounds allow you to do this.

Here’s the tip, try to find a local club, if you’re in the US go to http://www.usarchery.org. Go under Directory Search and find a club near you. Most will offer a free introductory class, some will let you use their equipment for free. Start light, specially if you’re going the recurve route. Start with something like a 15lbs bow, learn to shoot with proper form, your body will thank you for it. Specially if you’re just doing this for hobby, there’s no need to draw heavy weights. The only reason you need heavy weight bow is if you intend to kill something or reach long distances. A slow 10 is better than a fast miss.

To be honest, for someone just starting out, the best place to get information is at an archery shop. Go there, talk to the people that know, get measured for your draw length, try pulling back on a few bows, try it with and without a trigger release. this will help you decide which type of equipment you feel the most comfortable with and the shop owner will be able to answer as well as demonstrate the answer to all of your questions.
