With all the archery equipment you have already purchased you may be wondering why you would need a bow stabilizer. As the name suggests the primary function is to create a stable platform from which you shoot your arrows. The better balanced and stable your archery bows, the truer your arrows will fly, and that is what archery is all about. To fully understand why, you must first know what a stabilizer is and how it works with your archery bows.

What

Stabilizers are made of many different materials. Rubber, metal, plastic and carbon are all common materials used in a bow stabilizer. In the past, bow stabilizers were often completely metal, which added significant weight to the bow. You do not want nor need a lot of added weight, so today carbon and other materials are more common. The final addition to the bow stabilizer is a small weight at the very end.

Stabilizer Job

Decreasing the weight and adding other materials to a bow stabilizer has made them more effective at their job, which is to stabilize your bow and absorb shock from releasing the arrow. When you fire an arrow, there is a certain amount of recoil, if you will, which can be noisy not to mention hard on your archery bows. For this part of the job, manufacturers have found a way to incorporate rubber shock absorbers into the bow stabilizer.

To recap: Your bow stabilizer is responsible for two things, absorbing shock from arrow release and balancing your bow for better accuracy. Now, many hunters feel that their bow is too advanced to require a stabilizer bar, however the truth is every bow should have one. Regardless of how smooth and quiet your bow is, it will always make some noise, which is why you should have a stabilizer.

Choosing

Too often hunters and target shooters take the first stabilizer they pick up, which is a mistake. You will want to choose your stabilizer in much the same manner you do all of your archery equipment. You choose equipment based on its purpose and the same goes for a stabilizer.

Bow stabilizers can be small and compact or very long, competition archers typically use the longer stabilizers for increased accuracy while bow hunters who are trekking through the woods typically choose a shorter model. For the average hunting bow, your stabilizer does not need to be less than four inches nor more than ten, anywhere in between is fine.

Final Thoughts

If you are still undecided about the benefits of a bow stabilizer on your archery bows, you might want to consider a few facts. Professional archers use a stabilizer and they can pick a quarter off at 80 yards. Even if you are not planning to make such a daring shot isn’t it wise to have the best accuracy possible. Bow hunting is an extreme event and hunters owe it to the animals to make a quick, clean kill every time. Any amount of noise can spook your prey and when that happens your arrow does not land where you intended. An archery bow stabilizer could make all the difference.

Bow hunting or sport shooting is a popular past time for many people. It harkens back to an older time when things were less complicated but yet more challenging. Can you imagine dinnertime being totally dependent upon the days hunt? Even though archery is an old skill it has been brought into the 21st century with some decidedly technological advances. One of these advances is the archery release.

There are many options to consider when you are looking for an archery release. Your level of experience as well as your personal preference will figure into your decision. Here are a few types of bow releases you can choose from.

Wrist

The most common type of archery release is the wrist strap. This device has a convenient strap that goes around the wrist; this can be a buckle or a Velcro type attachment. The mechanical part of the wrist strap archery release is a set of jaws or calipers that hold the drawstring until you pull the trigger. These are very easy to use and reasonably priced.

Hand Held Bow Release

Competitive archers prefer the hand held release. This device is most commonly T shaped and is held in place by one or two fingers. One of the reasons competition shooters prefer this bow release is the fact that they are much lighter and smaller in size, which increases their edge in competition.

This type of archery device is triggered using back pressure and your thumb or pinky finger. As far as bow release devices go this one requires a good deal more practice than the wrist strap design. You will want to spend some time practicing to master this archery release.

Automatic Release

We have remote controls for everything now days and unbelievably archery releases are no exception. While this is not a true remote control, this bow release is close. This is a device you can preset to release through an automatic timer. The time frames can range from 0-6 seconds. The timer itself is activated when you reach full draw position and then releases the arrow after the determined time has elapsed. You can get this archery release with optional safety feature that gives you the ability to stop the release if the need arises. These are not recommended for the casual or beginning archer. Most often, this archery release will be found in professional competition circles.

Conclusion

There are many different types of archery releases available as well as many different manufacturers. If you are new to bow hunting or competition, you will probably want to stick with the most basic bow release available and then move on to more complex releases as your skill increases.

With any type of weapon, you need a way to gauge the location you are going to strike. For rifles and guns, this can be open sights built into the weapon or with the assistance of a magnifying scope. When it comes to compound bow and arrow set ups you do not have many options for using a scope and therefore must rely on archery sights.

Bow sights are odd-looking devices; they are generally a set of pins that can be adjusted for distance, wind age and accuracy. However, it is important to note that if you are using a crossbow there are several scope like archery sites you can use as well. First, we will look at compound bow sights.

Compound Archery Sights

Pin sights are the most commonly used sight in archery. They are available in a variety of compositions including circular, horizontal, vertical, movable and stationary. For example:

Browning Rack and Pinion Bow Sight

* Range finder

* Movable pins

* Color coated range finder bracket

* Good for recur or compound bows

* Around $20

Red Dot Bow Sight

* For compound bows

* Five MOA.

* 3 illuminated red dots

* 1 power

* $90

GWS Sight with Fiber Optic Pin

* 4 fiber optic pins

* Gang adjustable

* Simple yardage adjustment

* $13

These are just a few of the optional archery sights you can choose from. All that remains now is to determine which bow sights are the best. Part of this determination will be purely preference. Just as you have a favorite bow and preferred arrows, you will find that you will prefer one type of archery sight to another.

Pin based sights have been around the longest. These sights are simple to use and you can find them almost anywhere, including Wal-Mart. This means you will also be able to find replacement pins for them fairly easily, and if you use this type of bow sight, you will definitely want to carry extra pins with you. Laying your bow down can snap a pin quite efficiently and you would not want to have a hunting trip ruined by not having adequate sights! If you are aging a bit some of these pin sights can be hard to see. Therefore, you may be better served by a lighted or fiber optic bow sight.

There are many other things to consider when choosing the best bow sight. The type of bow you have, eyesight, terrain and even game can make a difference. For example if you are hunting in a brushy area with short-range shots you will not need an elaborate four pin archery sight, however if you are hunting the Great Plains you will.

Archery sights are an integral part of the bow hunting experience. Try out a few different models during practice to better familiarize yourself with them and then choose the bow sight that works best for your situation.

In the good ole days, an archer had a bow, quiver, arrows, arrowheads and if lucky the good sense to hunt where the animals were! While you could in theory still hunt with these bare bones essentials, there are so many great archery accessories available why would you want to? As far as what you need to bow hunt or target practice there are the downright have to have’s and then there are the buy it if you can afford it category.

Have to Have

In the must have category of archery accessories you have the essential tools of the trade. Below are the things you must have to successfully hunt your chosen prey.

Arrows

Arrows are essential archery accessories and you will have a variety to choose from. Arrows are commonly made from aluminum, carbon fiber or composite materials. The composition you choose will be as much personal preference as anything else, each of these types of arrows have their pros and cons.

Broadheads

Another no brainer when it comes to archery accessories is the arrowhead. In centuries past, these would be made of crude stone or steel that was manually sharpened. Today there are much more advanced arrowheads for you to choose from. Fixed blade and mechanical are the two categories for broad heads. Again, each has its pros and cons so you will want to try both and decide for yourself, which suits you.

Arrow Rest

Bows typically come equipped with an arrow rest, however these are basic accessories and many archers like to improve their odds by improving their bows performance. Your average arrow rest on a compound bow will be small and allow the arrow to pull to one side or the other, for this reason many people go with a more advanced archery accessory called a whisker biscuit. This is round contraption with fine carbon “whiskers” that come around the arrow to increase stability. Your arrow will fly straighter and truer with the addition of this accessory. One problem with early models of the whisker biscuit was damage to feathers or fletching, later models have been redesigned to minimize this damage.

Targets

You do not want to hit the woods with a new compound bow and arrows and hope you will hit something. You first need to practice at home, for this, you will need a target. There are all kinds of archery targets available from a simply foam filled block to life size replicas of the animals you will be hunting. The main thing to look for from your target is a material that will not be damaging to your tips or arrow.

Case

When you have gotten your archery accessories together, you will need a safe way to transport them. For this, you need a bow case, whether you have a compound or cross bow a case is handy to keep your arrows, tips, releases, extra fletching and more in one convenient location. When you are looking at cases be sure you have a measurement on your bow, it is easy to get one that is too small for your archery equipment.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the many archery accessories you will want and need. You also may want a quiver to easily carry your arrows into the field, advanced pin sights for better accuracy, release, scent guard, stands or blinds and much more. The above samplings are just a few things you must have for a successful hunt.
