Well, its time to get some new arrows. Im going to eventually buy myself an English longbow that will be custom tillered to 50 lbs at my draw length (with a few extra inches added for safety). I prefer wooden arrows not only for how they shoot, but how they look. Im a truly traditional archer who prefers no modern equipment at all and is interested in more of the martial aspect of medieval archery rather than modern sport/hunting. I hope to eventually be able to shoot 100+ lb warbows, but that has nothing to do with my questions, so ill move on.

So with that said, I was thinking of saving quite a bit of money and just make some arrows myself. I want to make as close to a medieval arrow as I can, but the shaft will be a dowel rod. I know I know, some of you advise against dowel rods, but they seem durable and reliable enough to me. My main question is, what diameter dowel rods should I buy? I dont know how to measure spine weight (or how I would go about doing so at a hardware store), so diameter is what im going by. The arrow length (without the field points) will be either 30 or 31 inches.

I have an 3/8 inch dowel rod with just a nock cut in at the end and markings along the shaft to tell me my draw length. Ive actually shot it before with my current 35lb bow and for an "arrow" without any fletchings or head, it did ok in terms of distance. That is if it wouldnt sway off left or right suddenly… Im guessing that diameter would be better suited for a 50lb bow, however. Should I go with that or the next size smaller?

If you still strongly not recommend dowel rods, where can I get better quality arrow shafts that wont cost me as much as the bow itself? Id happily buy professionally made arrows, but it would end up costing me over 0 for a quiver of 30. WAY out of my price range.

Thanks in advance!
Zakonye: Thanks, but still too expensive. Im trying to stay under for all the materials. I might turn to them if it turns out the dowel rods I find are crap though.

Well I’ve only really shot a real bow once in my life around like 3 years ago and I loved it. I’ve been begging my parents to bring me to an archery range but they never really listened. So I want to buy a bow and some arrows for some target shooting at my backyard. I need a good bow that will last a long time. I’m willing to spend 0 (well that’s really all the money I have) I’ve done some research and stuff and I’ve heard that you need a light bow, that a compound bow is more accurate then a re-curve bow and all those stuff. So please tell me which exact bow I should choose and if you can please also include the draw weight/length/price/and all those other things. Thanks a lot in advance if you can answer =]

Oh and I’m almost 13 and I live in Michigan, USA if that helps anybody.

Hey guys, I’m new to archery, I’ve been obsessed for a while but I just started last week so this was my second class. I just go to an archery range and shoot in the younger class. I don’t have that many ideas but I have the basics down.

Anyway I was looking for some videos on Youtube of how to aim a bow, but I can’t find a video on a basic recurve bow (only compound bows). I don’t use a compound bow because I’m a weirdo and I feel like the basic bows are more natural and that’s what I really like ^-^ I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to aim. I didn’t get many tips in class because they try not to baby you and sort of allow you to develop your own style that’s comfortable with you.

But I need some extra help! And also if someone could help me with putting the arrow on the bow string, Because I know you can’t use a bow very fast, but I am pretty slow at putting the arrows on. xD

DERP
I just need some good tips in general, thanks in advance guys, anything helps!
